SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Field Engineering / Field Support position supervises multiple project layouts and is responsible for the construction quality control, in particular, ensuring that the materials installed on the projects are in the proper location and are the correct materials.  The LFE analyzes drawings for dimension and quality control purposes and coordinates with the Project Manager, Lead Field Foreman, or Client to clarify discrepancies. The LFE uses the CAD files or documents to generate control on the jobs to ensure the work is being installed true and plumb.  The LFE may be required to assist other divisions within Thompson, LTD with layout/surveying assistance when required.  The LFE may be required to coordinate with other trades to ensure proper control point are being used.

ROLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support for field projects managed by on-site Project Superintendents, and Project Managers 

  • Perform all activities required in the Change Order Process for extra work tickets for TCC Projects he/she is involved in and confirms all tickets accounted for. 

    • Receive Cost Codes from Super/PM

    • Update all Change Order logs

    • Update all Gravel logs

    • Update all concrete logs

  • Track & Bill large specialty equipment to appropriate cost code not covered by overall general equipment cost item (track hoe, crane, dozer, lulls, mini hoes, etc)

  • Code Invoices to the appropriate jobs and cost codes

  • Assist Project Manager/Superintendent with any outstanding project administrative/field tasks as required for efficiency/client relations (submittals, logs, RFIs, etc).

  • Assist in field work no matter the task to show servant leadership and to value all aspects of construction. 

  • Works with Project Manager to ensure subcontractors and suppliers provide all required certificates, lien wavers, disclaimers, Warrantees etc. 

  • Involved in gathering of quotes and creating comparison worksheets for materials required on projects over $10k (rebar, aggregate, concrete, foam, form materials, etc).

  • Assist Project Manager to establish early closeouts goals and oversee the closeout process to ensure timely closeout, warranty and final as built submission and final payment are achieved in a timely manner.

  • Assist Project Team with problem solving and logistical needs on the project

  • Assist Project Team with resource planning

  • Perform additional assignments as directed by Project Manager, or Senior Project Manager

BASELINE QUALIFICATIONS:

The Field Engineer will possess the knowledge, skill, and/or ability in the following areas essential to perform the functions of the position.  

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelors Degree at a 4 year college or University; or 4-6 years of related experience and or training.

  • Line & Grade experience

Language / Communication Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business and technical documents, reports, legal or regulatory documents, drawings, and specifications.

  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from co-workers, customers, or regulatory agencies.

  • Ability to effectively present information to managers, clients, customers, and co-workers.

  • Good listening skills.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

  • Background in geometry

  • Knowledge of industry tolerances

  • Working knowledge of coordinates system, and ability to calculate through them.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to define problems collects information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to make decisions.

  • Understanding and working knowledge of contracts, specifications, and scopes of work.

  • Know the capabilities of the various manufacturers of survey equipment.

Quality Control

  • Verify initial control.

  • Computes all point of layout through CAD or document software.

  • Review construction documents for accuracy, deviations, and conflicts.

  • Completes daily logging and project documentation and RFI generation.

  • Verify quantity take-offs.

  • Determines methods of layout and educate other.

  • As built generation. 

Work Environment

  • Work will involve jobsite and corporate office environments.

  • Work involves exposure to outside weather conditions and dirt, dust, fumes, and loud noise levels.

  • Awareness of surroundings and report unsafe conditions or equipment.

  • Understanding of site specific safety plan.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to perform duties of this role year-round and on demanding work site.

  • Ability to drive to multiple job-site in any given day

  • Frequently required to stand and use hands for long periods of time.

  • Ability to use construction tools such as saws, drills, sledge hammers, ect.

  • Ability to work with co-workers to get the concrete work done when they are in a pinch.

  • Sets example by following safety guidelines including but not limited to wearing PPE on jobs, staying aware of surroundings, etc.
